In the beginning, my dad was very against my music lessons. Times were very hard, and music lessons seem an uncalled for luxury. Working 15 to 18 hours a day and seven days a week, the only luxury he allowed himself was an hour in front of the TV, and at that time, HK TV series were very popular. After listening to these songs daily for several months, one day, as I sat on my piano bench, I started to play them. These are the first songs I learned to play entirely by ear. My dad was shocked, but pleased as these are some of his favourite songs. From then on, he no longer complained about my music lessons, in fact, till today, he told everyone that his daughter is the most amazing pianist. ;D

Music from my childhood

Isn't it strange that, most of the time, songs bring us back to certain times of our lives, bringing bitter and sweet memories. Unlike most, my childhood was not filled with nursery rhymes and the likes. I grew up at the current shop I am working in today. My parents and I lived in a bedroom behind the shop, and everyday after work, while performing domestic chores, my mum will play these songs. I was told, I learned to sing these songs from very young. My mum said I was quite a performer, ha-ha-ha... Every night, I will stand on a stool, holding something resembling a microphone, and sang to them. Although times were difficult, I have a happy childhood filled with fun and music.

One Thousand Million Smiles

This song is very special in two occasions. My beloved music teacher, the late Yoshiko Leong, arranged this piece of music on electric keyboard for performance for Perak's Raja Muda, my first performance for the royal family.

This song is also special because it brings back fond memories of my days at Brookes University, Oxford. The Malaysian Society choir, where I was the pianist, performed this song in 1997's Malaysian Night. Yup, fun times, indeed.

I am not a fan of violent movies, especially those with swords and blood. But when I heard this song as the movie hubby watched came to an end, I fell in love with it instantly. I quickly grabbed a pencil and notepad and tried to note down the music, as I listened along. The movie is Curse Of The Golden Flower, the song title is JU HUA TAI, which simply translates to Chrysanthamum Bed, by Jay Chou. It is a lovely song.
